Dr. Barry Lieberman, chiropractor, nutritionist, beverly hillsFirst, let me tell you that the purpose of this article is to empower you to take charge of your own healthcare and your own health. There may be some things in this article that make you feel uncomfortable, but a short bout of discomfort is much better than ignorantly suffering helplessly with fibromyalgia for the rest of your life.

"Fibromyalgia," is a label used to name a syndrome that appears mostly in the muscular system of the body. It manifests as widespread painful symptoms, or pain all over the body, with bouts of fibro fog, or brain fog (mind can't focus), chronic fatigue (fm/cfs), exhaustion, and other symptoms such as headaches and sensitivity to touch—even though the "cause" is not known.

The term "fibromyalgia" does not define a disease process—it just names a group of symptoms for lack of a better term. It does not identify any causes of fibromyalgia. This is an important distinction. The "fibromyalgia" label is used instead of saying "widespread, chronic pain, chronic fatigue and bouts of brain fog." In giving you a "diagnostic term" like "fibromyalgia" the doctor may give you the impression that he really knows how to help you.

Unfortunately, most doctors, even in Los Angeles, have no idea what to do with fibromyalgia, except treat it with acute-care or crisis-care drugs like pain killers and muscle relaxants. But those drugs are for acute care. Short term relief. They don't help your brain-fog, mental-fog, fibro-fog. Eventually, that approach will always fail. There are no conventional cures for fibromyalgia.

Although the chronic pain of fibromyalgia can be "controlled" to some unacceptable extent with a slew of western medicines designed for a crisis, it is important to be aware of this fact: those medicines will not change the underlying process that causes the pain, at all —they are only a temporary fix! That's because the causes of fibromyalgia are still unknown except to a select few holistic doctors using a functional medicine system. So, unless you want to take those drugs in increasing doses for the rest of your life, and suffer their side effects, you had better find an alternative to your fibromyalgia pain management, for the long term.

Is just fighting the symptoms for the rest of your life all you can do? You might believe it’s the only thing available, but it's not, and killing the chronic pain with drugs doesn't mean your fibromyalgia has become fundamentally any better. Your pain symptoms might be less, but not the mental fog, "fibro fog". If you were to stop taking the pain killers, wouldn't the pain come right back? You should know that long term use of these drugs, originally designed to be a temporary fix, will very likely lead to other complications; the onset of other, seemingly non-related symptoms in the future, which, in turn, can be "controlled" with more drugs—an undesirable cascade of events.

A better solution for fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia cures and real solutions can be pursued, even in tandem with temporarily killing pain (which might be necessary for now). Find yourself a licensed, holistic chiropractor who will be well versed in alternative medicine and functional medicine, to uncover and address the underlying multiple causes of your fibromyalgia. The only way you will be able to address the real causes of fibromyalgia is by looking at this pain syndrome with different lenses. You have to stop just chasing the symptoms away and look for the functional problems, the underlying conditions that are present and contributing to your overall health condition. Can a pain-killing approach and this alternative functional medicine approach be used at the same time? Yes.

Contributing Factors to Fibromyalgia: My experience shows that the person who suffers from fibromyalgia likely has some underlying, functional digestive system compromise, as evidenced by taking antacids, or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), including Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, or Nexium for heartburn. Likely, a person with fibromyalgia has already had some kind of surgery in the past—like gall bladder removal, or is scheduled for surgery in the future for some other chronic, functional problem. As a matter of fact, there are so many other possibilities for contributing factors, or "causes" of this chronic pain syndrome, including functional impairments at one or several levels of the spine, that it becomes an impossible task for you to try to solve this puzzle all on your own. It is just as impossible with only the help of a doctor who prescribes drugs as his/her tools to manage your pain.

If that's what your experience is now, I hope you are willing to accept a fact about the way medicine is practiced. You must realize that a doctor usually just sees what he believes. In your case, your doctor believes that your problem stems from your pain, so his focus is treating your pain, but not the processes that brings-about your chronic pain.

What you want is a doctor who can search for the hidden multiple causes and understand what is revealed: your weakest links. The causes of fibromyalgia can be revealed this way. You must seek the help of a knowledgeable professional, a holistic chiropractor who can examine you to reveal the functional causes of fibromyalgia, and in revealing your underlying weakest links, find your cures, instead of just treating the end results; your symptoms. We are located in Beverly Hills, and we serve greater Los Angeles. You will save years of chronic pain, anguish and suffering if you allow yourself to seek the help of the right alternative fibromyalgia specialist, and choose the alternative sooner, rather than later.
